‘Twas Just Weeks Before Christmas. . .
Twas just weeks before Christmas, and all through the house,
Was a hustle and bustle, including the mouse.
The stockings were hung by the TV with care,
In hopes that school holidays soon would be here;
The children weren’t nestled all snug in their beds,
Still eating those chocolates which went to their heads;
And dad in his recliner, and I on my ‘puter,
Playing with photos, which one was cuter?
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my chair to see what was the matter.
Out the front door I flew like a flash,
Just barely in time to put out my trash.
The clatter of dishes, a wee bit late,
Too much going on, kids that love to debate;
The boxes were scattered, strung here and there,
Nativity scene unpacked from its boxes with care.
Our windows were open, no chance of snow,
My son on the rooftop, following prompts from below;
“Now, to the left! No to the right!”
“Don’t tangle those cords! Oh I hope he’s alright”!
To the top of the porch! To the top of the roof!
White lights now twinkling, without even one goof.
Shopping half done, presents not wrapped,
Cards in the works, computer keys tapped.
Carols are playing, when the kids can agree,
Which tunes are favorites and which to let be.
Sirens are sounding, tis it Santa at last?
Remember Fire Engine Santa from Christmases past?
Remembering, remembering, the reason for season;
The gift we were given, the gift of His Son.
Just open your eyes, to follow His lead,
Smile as you help someone who has need.
Just some little thing, to brighten a day,
And your day will be better, whether at work or at play.
A little bit short,
A little bit sweet,
Merry Christmas to all,
And to all a Good Night!

Heidi,
This is possibly the greatest thing you’ve ever written… at least that I’ve had the privilege to read. Such a heartwarming snapshot of your family.
I cracked up at this stanza:
“When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my chair to see what was the matter.
Out the front door I flew like a flash,
Just barely in time to put out my trash.”
Thank you so much for being the “24 Blogging Days Cheerleader” – I owe much of the event’s success to your help. You really, really are a true team player.

Hi Heidi,
Echoing Dina’s comment. . . This was such fun to read. So playful.
Also, you were the cheerleader who alerted me to this project. Although I’ve known Dina for a while, it was your announcement that made me aware of and to decide to meet the challenge.

Very fun! I have memories of some of these very same things….we also just had a mouse in our house that was driving the cats nuts! The mouse seemed to want to play with the cats. The cats did not harm the mouse (very interesting) and then the mouse climbed into my husband’s hand and he set him outside….how weird is that!
Santa Mouse was at our house…tell me more about your inspirational mouse, Heidi:)

Glad that y’all enjoyed it. Sometimes it is fun just to play with words, easy to write when you know the right words just come to mind.
Creative writing is so much easier for me than a press release, or other such words.
